Constructing Meaning

1997 Exhibition at the King County Arts Gallery, Seattle, WA

This exhibition of photographic paintings, sculptures and books was created after living in Rome as a NIAUSI fellow in 1996. While there I felt isolated from the spoken and written language as I spoke little Italian. Since language is at the center of what allows us to make sense of our world, I was forced to “read” the city by constructing a reality based on experiencing daily life in the city. The installation, an urban piazza with obelisk, combines fragments of posters, large photographic paintings, small photograms, monotypes and sculptural works that integrate the texts from Marinetti’s Futurist Manifestos and the bible.
